Knitted Together

How many times have you looked in the mirror and wished that someone could know you for who you really are? Someone who you don’t have to explain yourself to or put on a happy face for. An individual who knows your past and who understands the dreams you have for the future. So often in relationships we feel misunderstood and frustrated because our intentions are misinterpreted. We spend countless hours explaining, justifying, clarifying, and analyzing our every gesture, thought, word, or deed. Hoping that we will be seen, heard, understood, and loved.

Yet the Bible clearly says in Psalm 139:
O Lord, you have searched me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise, you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down. You are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely.
How wonderful it is to know that the Creator of the Universe intimately knows you. He knew you long before your family, your friends, or your partner knew you. He knew you before you knew yourself. And His love is truly unconditional. There is no need to search for the right word to justify your existence or particular heart’s desire because He “created your innermost being and knitted you together in your mother’s womb” (Psalm 139:13).
Knitting. That’s a marvelous metaphor for the love God has for you. Those of us who are familiar with the process of knitting understand the importance of selecting a skein of yarn that is perfect for our project. We want the right color, the right texture, and the right heft and once we’ve made our selection we begin.
Now let that sink in for a moment!
Imagine God preparing to “knit you”. He carefully selected His materials: your height, your weight, the breadth of your nose, the texture of your hair, and your gender. He chose a measure of humor, and a little impatience, a portion of silliness and a little more of this or that to create you for the project that He has for a time such as this. Everything about you is needed and necessary in order to do what He has created you to do. You are perfect just the way you are and there is really no need to try to explain it to anyone else because God sees you. He knows you. He created you for His special purpose.
And that special purpose will be revealed in His time. Take comfort in the fact that every experience you have is preparing you for His project.
Every good knitter knows that even the remnants, the cast off pieces, can be used for something special. God loves you, and He knows YOU. He knows your beginning from your end, every mistake and misstep you’ve made and those you have yet to make. He knows every thought you have before it is formed in your mind. Carefully He holds you in the loving hammock of His embrace and whispers to you, “My Beloved, I Know You. I see you. There’s never again a need to explain.”
There’s no greater love than that.
